REC Solar Panels To Help Power Audi Production

REC has supplied nearly 10,000 REC Peak Energy Series solar panels for a rooftop array at Audi’s production plant in Brussels, Belgium.

At 3.6 MW, the rooftop installation is the largest in Brussels and is expected to generate more than 3,000 megawatt hours of clean electricity annually.

The power generated will  be used entirely by Audi for their assembly lines for the Audi A1 model – a vehicle with its own impressive green credentials.

“Self-consumption directly rewards consumers’ efforts to optimize energy consumption,” said Guido Breens, REC’s Business Development Manager Benelux and UK .

“We at REC see that self-consumption solar installations are on the rise in many European countries. The Audi project in Brussels demonstrates that third party financed solar projects with self consumption on the site are profitable.”

The project was funded by energy utility Eneco Belgium, which has set its sights on being the most sustainable energy utility company in Belgium by 2016 by producing electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources.

REC solar panels were chosen for the project based on their excellent power output and quality. Additionally, REC panels have a low carbon footprint, with an energy payback time of just one year.

The project will be a significant contributor to Brussels and Belgium’s climate targets, which are to source eight and thirteen percent respectively of electricity generated from renewable energy sources by 2020

In other REC news and closer to home, the company’s award winning solar panels will be in the spotlight again tomorrow at the official launch of Port Macquarie Library’s solar array.

The 99kW REC solar panel based system was installed by Wauchope Solar in partnership with Energy Matters. The array will produce an estimated 154 megawatt hours of clean electricity annually and avoid 179 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
