Dominion Generation has flicked the switch on three solar farms in Marion County, Indiana; totaling 28.6 megawatts capacity.

Indy Solar I, II and III will provide electricity for Indianapolis Power and Light Company under a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA). The projects were acquired from Sunrise Energy Ventures, LLC, in July this year.

“The successful launching of these solar projects marks another milestone in Dominion’s continuing development of solar energy,” said David Christian, CEO of Dominion Generation.

Earlier this month, Dominion also announced it will install more than 2,000 solar panels on the rooftop of Canon Virginia Inc.’s (CVI) Industrial Resource Technologies (IRT) facility in Gloucester, which will be the largest rooftop solar power system so far in the Commonwealth.

The 500kW solar array will produce enough to power to serve the needs of around 125 households. Construction is expected to start this month and the system should be fully up and running early next year.

Earlier this year, operations at Dominion’s 7.7 megawatt solar installation near Augusta, Georgia and a 5 megawatt facility at Somers, Connecticut also commenced.

Dominion has a portfolio of approximately 23,500 megawatts capacity of power generation, 17,700 kilometres of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipeline and 10,300 kilometres of electric transmission lines.

The company’s power generation assets are diverse – solar, wind, hydro, biomass, coal, gas, oil and nuclear. It serves retail energy customers in 15 U.S. states

Dominion has also implemented the Solar Partnership Program; a multi-year pilot initiative designed to expand the company’s understanding of community-based solar energy. Under the Program, Dominion will construct and operate up to 30 megawatts of company-owned solar facilities on leased rooftops or on the grounds of commercial businesses and public properties throughout its Virginia service area.
