SunEdison Completes US Air Force Base Solar Project

SunEdison and MIC Solar Energy Holdings announced last week the completion of a 16.4 megawatt solar farm located on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona.

SunEdison and MIC Solar Energy Holdings announced last week the completion of a 16.4 megawatt solar farm located on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona.

The facility has been designed to provide 35 percent of the base’s electricity requirements and will save the Air Force approximately half a million dollars annually for the next 25 years.

The plant, which generates enough power to supply the needs of more than 5,000 households, is located on two plots of previously underutilized land totaling 170 acres at the base, which is situated outside Tucson.

“This project is the result of a symbiotic relationship between private and public organization,” said Col. Kevin Blanchard, Commander of Davis-Monthan AFB.

“By coming together and combining our expertise we’ve successfully completed a project that many initially doubted was possible. The results speak for themselves, everyone’s hard work has paid off in a way that is helping us reduce expenses and be good stewards of the environment.”

SunEdison develops, finances, operates and monitors solar installations globally and is a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials; a polysilicon and silicon wafer manufacturer. The company has developed more than 883 MW of solar energy capacity over 646 operational sites that have delivered in excess of 794,430 MWh of electricity.

According to its recently announced financial results for the 2013 fourth quarter, SunEdison ended the quarter with a project pipeline of 3.4 GW, up 269 MW compared to the prior quarter and up 805 MW from Q4 in 2012.

In other recent SunEdison news, the company announced earlier this month that it had completed a 306 kW rooftop solar system for Whole Foods Market in Brooklyn, New York. The array is installed on a parking canopy structure that also harvests rainwater, which is stored in a 113,000 litre underground tank.

SunEdison and Whole Foods Market have jointly deployed 1.5 MW of solar projects.
