More electric and hybrid vehicles are hitting the roads this holiday season as rental companies add more Electric Vehicles (EVs) to their fleet. This is due to the growing demand for EVs, not only from curious drivers but also those who are trying to save more money on petrol costs.

Hertz Asia Pacific conducted a survey of over 1,000 Aussies that showed two in three wanted to rent EVs, especially this holiday season. According to Eoin MacNeill, the vice-president of Hertz Asia Pacific, “There’s curiosity about trying one of these cars. There’s a particular curiosity from travellers and if you’re not doing a massive road trip across Australia these are perfect for driving around Noosa and having a nice holiday.”

It can be recalled that the firm recently added Tesla and Polestar vehicles to their fleet. From there, they saw a strong interest from individuals who want to cut costs on petrol.

This also comes at the right time as petrol prices tend to spike at Christmas.

There is now a growing number of EVs being launched in AU. For one, NRMA recently launched their fleet of Tesla and MG electric vehicles. They will be under the SIXT brand, offering various services, such as Uber Carshare and Turn rent.

In addition, Thrifty and Pinto are now offering hybrid vehicles for rent in Australia. According to the marketing head of Kinto, Vesna Benns, they have received positive feedback from customers, whilst some first-time users complain that they can’t hear the engine.

With this, now is the perfect time to switch to electric vehicles. Are you ready to make your next car an EV? Book a test drive today!

Purchasing an EV

Last month was an excellent month for EV uptake, with the FCAI’s report that showed full-battery EVs making up 4.7 per cent of all vehicles sold.

Tesla’s Model Y snags the top spot with over 1,800 sales, followed by BYD, which sold over 800 Atto 3s. Claiming the third spot is Tesla’s Model 3 sedan, with over 300 sales in November.

BYD is an affordable EV, and it is the first time an EV under $50,000 has made it to the top three. This also shows that affordable electric vehicles will play a significant role in the passenger and fleet transition in the country. That said, BYD will significantly contribute to more EVs on the road.

Another EV that is getting higher sales in Australia is the Volvo C40 and Polestar 2. Hyundai also made it to the list with over 150 EVs sold, followed by the BMW iX. Before the new year rolls around, it’s likely that the EV fleet in the country will reach 70,000.
